Learn The Guiding Principles of Recovery as Stipulated by SAMHSA

There are 10 Guiding Principles of Recovery, designed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), that help drug abusers stay sober once they’ve completed their rehabilitation. SAMHSA defines recovery as “the period of transformation through which persons improve their quality of life and well-being, live a self-directed life, and endeavor to attain their full potential.” As a recovering addict, it’s critical to view recovery as an ongoing process and treat it. This means adopting a new way of life gradually and deliberately to see beneficial outcomes.

Principles of Addiction Recovery

Everyone’s rehabilitation process is unique, but a wide range of interconnected elements normally impacts it. It is important to consider the kind, intensity, and duration of the dependency and the individual’s unique features, history, and family life. There are, however, certain fundamental principles that apply to all drug abuse therapy programs. SAMHSA has established the following as the key principles of recovery:

  1. The “catalyst of the recovery process” is the hope that “individuals can and do overcome issues, impediments, and challenges that face them.”
  2. An individual’s entire life is considered in the process of recovery.
  3. People are in the responsible of their own health and well-being. “Self-determination and self-direction are the cornerstones for recovery because they allow persons [who are] motivated and equipped with resources to make informed choices, begin rehabilitation…and regain or restore control over their lives.”
  4. Friends and allies aid in the rehabilitation process. An important sense of belonging, a network of supporting relationships, and an appreciation for one’s role in the community are all provided by peers.
  5. There is a slew of options for treatment. It is possible to heal through various means, including professional therapy, medication, family support, and faith-based or peer-based alternatives.
  6. Recovery begins with a foundation of respect for oneself and others. People with mental and drug use issues must be accepted and appreciated by their communities and the system.
  7. Recovery is a non-linear process marked by “consistent growth and improved functioning, which may include setbacks.”
  8. Rebuilding one’s social and personal network is an important part of the rehabilitation process.
  9. As a result of “…cultural background in all of its diverse representations…are vital in creating a person’s path and individual’s ability to recover,” rehabilitation is culturally oriented and impacted.
  10. Addressing trauma, which “…is typically a prelude to or associated with alcohol and drug abuse, mental health disorders, and related difficulties,” helps with recovery.

What to Do After Treatment

Many people find it difficult to leave therapy and return to a normal life without it. Fortunately, transitional housing facilities may help recovering addicts keep their sobriety while reintegrating back into society. Treatment outcomes for drug abusers can be improved by residing in sober living facilities. Longer stays, up to several months, can be held at prices equivalent to those of an apartment. Sober living residences restrict the use of drugs and alcohol. Sobriety residences help people avoid returning to high-risk living arrangements before their recovery has been developed enough to cope with the stresses and stressors of everyday life.
