Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

ADAS’s focuses on reducing the possibility of collisions with the aim of reducing human injury. The system synchronizes the functionality of several technologies namely, the blind spot monitor, cruise control (adaptive in nature) and the automated braking system. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

As an improvement to the standard cruise control, the ACC uses radar technology to determine and maintain a safe driving distance with the vehicle ahead. In doing so, the braking distance is not compromised. Some manufacturers have incorporated a Stop and Go functionality whose purpose is to gauge and match with the traffic speeds. The car can, therefore, slow down or increase its speeds depending on the driving nature of the other vehicles.

Night Vision Systems

The systems come in two options, passive and active night vision. Infrared technology is employed on the active night vision. The system illuminates objects that would have otherwise not been detected by the driver. In projecting further than the headlights, the active night vision system identifies and projects an image of the danger ahead, which could be an individual or an animal. Passive night systems rely on the use of thermographic cameras. As the name suggests, any thermal detection triggers the sensors and alerts the driver. Night vision is said to have a viewing range of up to four times that of the headlights.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

Thanks to the cameras mounted on the windshield and the rearview mirror, the system analyses the proximity of the car to the lane markers. In the event that the vehicle is close to the markers, and a hazard is detected, an alert is issued and especially so if the signal indication has not been activated. 

Collision Avoidance Assist (CA)

CA relies on the use of radar sensors that are quite sensitive. The radar sensors at the front, determine the speed of the objects in the vehicle’s path as well as the impending danger of a possible collision. Through its audio and visual features, the driver is warned and given maneuvers that could be employed to avoid an imminent collision. Pedestrian Detection Warning

In using the radar and laser technology fitted in the car, the system analyzes the surroundings of the vehicle, especially on its path. The system conveys an accurate description of whether the pedestrian is crossing or standing at the roadside or a cyclist is in close proximity to the car.

Driver Drowsiness Detection

The system also goes by the name of Driver Awareness, Attention Alert, Fatigue Management system or Driver Alert. The system is quite impressive and has two features incorporated to work as one. The first uses facial recognition and night vision. Through its evaluation of the driver’s head angle, muscle movement, and blinking patterns, the computer can determine accurately when the driver is fresh, and an alarm is triggered if he is not fit to be behind the wheel. The second feature profiles the motorist’s driving patterns and any changes trigger a warning for an immediate pullover.
